The situation in the Red Sea with the rebels from Yemen firing off drones indiscriminately at passing cargo ships is quite a concerning development. Ships going around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa are adding an additional 10 days onto their journey to avoid the Suez Canal. That is an expensive and unsustainable option.
I hadn’t thought to long on the potential for drone defence on commercial ships previously, but now I can see an urgent need for the technology to enable safe passage through conflict zones. Drone warfare has enabled the poorest country in the region to disrupt global trade with ease and they could keep it up indefinitely. How many millions have already been lost due to delayed shipping? How much are the nations, led by the USA, willing to spend to keep patrol ships in the Red Sea to detect and shoot down cheap drones with cutting edge missiles? I can see DRO providing an ideal solution to this growing problem.
