This is a perfect example of the One True Cause fallacy: since the Indian Ocean Dipole causes dry weather in Australia, nothing else can possibly contribute to drier weather. It’s a flaw in reasoning that’s rife throughout the denialist community. Another current example:
”Since many bushfires are lit by arsonists, changes in the climate can’t possibly be blamed for any increase in the rate or severity of bushfires.”
Simplistic and trite. In reality, every event has multiple contributing factors - one of which is most certainly the steadily increasing average temperature of the globe. That’s what sets the baseline that oscillations like the IOD wiggle around.
