Beijing, Aug 23 (PTI)
Nearly 5 million people are facing acute drinking water shortage and 8.7 million hectares of farmland have been damaged due to drought in northern China, local officials said.
The drought has caused water shortages for 4.6 million people and 4.1 million head of livestock, Xinhua news agency quoted the office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters as saying.
China's anti-drought authority has demanded more efforts to fight drought in the north, and warned possible drought in the south due to lack of rainfall .
A long-lingering drought in China has damaged 8.67 million hectares of farmland, report said.
China has dispatched three working teams to organise and guide anti-drought efforts in the worst-hit provinces of Liaoning and Jilin, and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The drought, which hit north and northeast China since late July, is likely to continue, official warned.
