IMO to long term investors the most important thing is the underlying NTA. If they really wanted to provide a true discount on the DRP it would have to be from the NTA and to be honest why would you even bother if it was above the NTA. As you said diluting other people's holdings isn't that big a problem as everyone has the option of doing so if they wish.
Still, i'd prefer the method you outlined than what currently happens.
Out of interest, do you normally subscribe to the DRP?
