Dont know about surgery , but the last couple of years there has been a safety push for no touching suspended loads due to crush injuries and belief all injuries can be prevented eg Bluescope .Very challenging in the maintenance and construction world , currently people have to use no touch tools , kind of extension of hand , can be very awkward.
A DST method and device would seem a good alternative , particularly with a laser guide to accurately position the component.
