DSTD approved for Ramu and production commenced but the issue is far from over.

The US$1.5 billion Ramu nickel cobalt mine, in Papua New Guinea, has loaded its maiden shipment from the Basamuk process plant, the developers, Highlands Pacific, reported yesterday.
“This is a major milestone for the project and will be the first of many shipments to follow,” Highlands Pacific mana¬ging director John Gooding said in a statement to the Australian stock exchange.

The Mineral Resource Authority is inviting landholders living along the Rai coast in Madang to a presentation on the potential impacts of the marine dumping of toxic waste from the Chinese / Highlands Pacific owned Ramu nickel mine.
The landholders had tried to prevent the marine dumping on the basis it will cause inevitable environmental harm, something the court agreed but refused to stop the dumping on the basis it had already been approved by the government.
But the court did order further scientific research - research that should have been done before the waste dumping was approved.
