Rallies in AGL Energy and AMP following earnings reports helped offset losses in miners and push the local sharemarket into the black at the close.
Sentiment see-sawed during the session but eventually turned positive late in the afternoon, pushing the benchmark XJO 0.2 per cent higher, to 5665

U.S. equities traded higher on Thursday after Trump said he would give an announcement regarding taxes in the next few weeks.
"Lowering the overall tax burden on American business is big league ... that's coming along very well. We're way ahead of schedule, I believe. And we're going to announce something I would say over the next two or three weeks that will be phenomenal in terms of tax," The Pussy Grabber said .
The Dow Jones industrial average rose around 150 points, with Goldman Sachs contributing the most gains.
"It's almost a resumption of the Trump trade," said Matt Weller, senior market analyst at Faraday Research. "In his acceptance speech, Trump talked about infrastructure and deregulation, but in recent weeks he'd gotten away from that.
This is sort of reigniting those animal spirits," he said.
The S&P 500 advanced about 0.7 percent, with financials rising 1 percent, hitting a new all-time high.
The Nasdaq composite also hit a fresh all-time high, rising 0.7 percent.

Oil prices rose on Thursday after an unexpected draw in U.S. gasoline inventories pointed to higher demand in the world's biggest oil market.
U.S. light crude was up 66 cents, or 1.3 percent, at $53 a barrel. Benchmark Brent crude rose 51 cents a barrel, or 0.9 percent, to $55.63 per barrel by 2:33 p.m. ET (1933 GMT).

Gold prices were ending the U.S. day session weaker Thursday, on a corrective pullback from recent gains that saw prices Wednesday hit a nearly three-month high. Some profit taking from the shorter-term futures traders was featured. Also, a higher U.S. dollar index on this day worked against the precious metals markets bulls. 4
