Used to follow him a bit, the album with Chet Atkins etc. Melodic is the word that springs to mind when I think of his playing, his guitar perhaps doing a lot of what his voice cannot not. It's obviously been a hugely winning formula so why screw with it too much? Perhaps hasn't been quite as inventive as say a Bowie or a Dylan but he seems to enjoy just being a regular guy when you see his interviews so maybe never wanted to step into far flung characters. Always thought his guitar set up and playing produced a very attractive sound.
