but analysts producing research for broad client consumption have an enormous "duty of care"...management can only state numbers that are consistent and proven
I've never heard of these hypothetical analysts. Real analysts, whose reports you read from banks and brokers, are sell-side analyst. They are notorious for having conflicts of interest, and recommending stocks they have an investment banking relationship with.
