I don't think it's manipulation pre-se. It's just that there are some very big players and some small ones in the retail holders cohort. I've lost plenty but it's just part of a big diversified portfolio.
Importantly I've focussed very on understanding my risk tolerance. I suspect the biggest area of misunderstanding of smaller holders and HC posters as a subset of that.
I also think non-retail sharehloders e.g. people with superfunds who have them managed possibly having even less appreciation (some more - some less) are worse. For example . Expecting 7% or 8% p.a. return against a 3% inflation rate is ridiculously high. Aust. productivity growth is down around 1%. Now that return is promoted by government websites and I can guarantee you they wont take the can for that misjudgement. (What they will do is hope we are still the lucky(ier) country.
