Among the first wells this year will be Santos's Dukas-1 wildcat in the onshore NT, targeting a multi-trillion cubic feet conventional gas prospect in a completely new play type for Australia. 

Success at Dukas could support the economics of building a 500-kilometre pipeline between the Amadeus Basin and Moomba in South Australia's north, EnergyQuest said, describing the prospect as "a wildcard in the east-coast gas shortage".

Santos said on Tuesday the well would be likely to start drilling late in the March quarter or early next quarter, subject to regulatory approval, and would be followed by two horizontal appraisal wells targeting shale gas to the north in the McArthur Basin, also with "multi-TCF potential".
