I know exactly why a stock goes up. More buyers than sellers. This is not terribly profound. It is however the result of sentiment. There are many different reasons why sentiment may improve for a stock.

As with all gambling, stock market analysis tries to improve your chances of making money and not going broke, by: (in order of importance)

1. Good money management and risk analysis
2. assessing times when a stock is considerably more likely to rise than fall, by use of either:

- analysis of broad sectoral sentiment
- chart analysis
- fundamental analysis

all of which can improve chances.
