I enjoyed the film but I thought it could have been better. Visually it was spot on but at 140 minutes or so it was still too short (even for part one) and left out a lot of character and plot development that was important and made Dune what it is.
A good example is Piter de Vries, the Harkonnan mentat. In the book he was a truly vile and despicable character but in the film he was reduced to a somewhat insipid advisor.
Still, I will be there for part two when it arrives...
