Correct me if I am wrong but I thought the idea was to find the boundaries. To find the boundaries you go out 5km dig a hole if no find come in 2.5Km dif a hole then decide on the third and subsequent holes based on what you find.
I am not convinced that this is as bad a thing as its been made out. If it was a strike they would go out another 5 Km and dig another, then another, then another ...
