    It's a fair way to the election, but I don't see anyone feeling like ruining their political careers by taking the reins of the Opposition at this point. The alternatives are young enough to wait for Peter Dutton to take them to the vote next year and look to take over if and when he loses, giving them a clean slate, no spill, no leadership tensions, and the maximum possible period between then and the election in 2028. It also gives them the opportunity to roadtest policies at the upcoming election and decide if they're worth persevering with 3 years later.

    Regarding the Dunkley by-election, there were no ramifications for Dutton's leadership. It was a predictable outcome from the perspective of both major parties, no matter what they said to you in front of a camera on the night.
