The problem in Australia it is not legal to carry ANY self-defense weapon. The reason being not to give criminals a right to carry. So the community MUST rely on the Police and private security for protection. Unfortunately they are not up to the task due to enforced economic restraint. How often do we see private citizens using dinner trays, chairs, milk crates and many other domestic items for self protection and the protection of others.
Governments continually state their first priority is to protect us; well it isn't working. State governments are more interested in building stadiums than hospitals, paramedics and police numbers. The turn-out to emergencies looks good but try getting an ambulance at home and then stack in a hospital corridor.
The system is broken; immigration, housing, health and snouts in the trough.
