Renewables are going to be near nuclear power stations replacing the footprints that was used by fossil fuel.
This should reduce the need for an explosion of transmission lines but simply possibly a need to upgrade them.
Any further expansion by renewables above the current foot print used by fossil fuels amounts to environmental vandals!
