The Jerusalem Post reported US deputy secretary Kurt Campbell earlier this weeksaying the administration was "seeking to align its position with Israel on any response to Iran's attack but also recognises the Middle East is on a 'knife's edge' and a broader escalation could imperil both Israeli and US interests".
The paper reported Campbell had repeated to a virtual event hosted by Washington-based think tank Carnegie Endowment, "the US view that what Tehran has undertaken was 'deeply irresponsible' and that there must be a 'return message'".
"I think we tried to underscore our support for some of the actions that Israel has taken," he added. "We have a real wariness about an extended or substantial ground set of operations in Lebanon."

For several days this week, Opposition Leader Peter
Dutton has been arguing that there is a clear division between the Albanese government and the US and other major Western powers over what is happening in the Middle East.
"It is a dangerous part of the world and when people want to exterminate a race of people, when they want to annihilate the whole country, you can understand that Israel has a right to defend herself, and as President Biden pointed out, and President Macron and others, they are fully supported by the United States and unfortunately this government here has taken a position which is at odds with some of our key partners," Dutton said on Friday.

Dutton divides the nation and denigrates the Labs who have refused to take sides.
very sensible of Albanese to avoid siding one way or the other. this is not our fight and is fraught with extreme risk. very foolish of Dutton when the US is reluctant to support much of their conduct. Dutton dives in headfirst into the Israeli side without consideration of the dangers the Israeli extreme actions are risking to the whole world.
Dutton's support can;'t be for electoral results as it is more likely to lose votes where he wants to gain support in Sydney/Melbourne middle urban seats where there are higher numbers of Muslim citizens.
some might say he has chosen the "right side" to support. others may think he's siding with pure aggression and thinks he's backing a winner. but whatever he is choosing to divide the nation.
Dutton admits he wants to split the nation into those that support Libs and 'others'..... but to divide is to conquer, yet a govt should be uniting the country on values and issues which are important to all.
Dutton thinks uniting the nation is to win every voters support. he won't win this way.
