apparently x% (i forget the amount) of the human sensation identified as taste, is due to the smell of the item as it is consumed. this is why wine and beer glasses are shaped the way they are, and why certain drinks are served in particular glasses. even the shape of a beer bottle can effect the aroma of the beer as it is poured into a glass, (im told beer should be drunk from a glass, however the bottles always seem to leap at my face and pour themselves down my throat before i have a chance to find a glass.)
for me the best representation of this is in the beer bottle for Wahoo!, a kolsch brewed by Gage Roads in Perth. the neck of the bottle has a corkscrew effect, which is manufactured into the internal neck of the bottle. as the beer is poured it forms an eddy in the neck, which releases the aroma of the beer, stimulating the senses.

if you have a look at the picture of the bottle in the attached link, you can see the corkscrew effect inside the neck of the bottle.
