The brokers use software packages than can execute at lightning speed compared to retail investors & also receive preferential treatment.
I watched the hearing for Gamestop over the weekend. A congressman questioned the CEO of Citadel about whether or not brokers receive preferential treatment in return for payments & he could not give a proper answer infuriating the congressman.
Keith Gill the investor that started it all was also at the hearing. Mentions he researched Gamestop & believed it was undervalued so started buying up. He ended up buying about $50k over a year or so time frame & it went to over $50M.
