If you look at the following chart there is a huge gap. SP was about $2,580 or so & must have been a big announcement & SP opened at $2,700+ creating a gap between the last close price & open price.

On many occasions the SP retraces to fill the gap. However, the gap does not always have to be filled if it is a breakaway gap.

A breakaway gap occurs when prices are breaking out of a range on significant volume, developing a new trend. As a result of a new trend bringing in new market participants and catching many off-sides, this gap generally does not fill and sees upside follow-through relatively quickly.
