No it certainly doesn’t need to close and other indicators are far more important than gaps IMO. They alway get a lot of attention as they are easy to identify therefore many folks repeat that there’s a gap to close.
Put it this way and I think this is important, just because a gap closes, doesn’t mean that the SP will reverse and go back up. They are simply a technical target to clean up but hardly ever signal a trend reversal . IMO.
