You pay for the ability, or “option”, to pay 2 cents for the 5 cent shares in your example. But I am hoping they’ll be $5 by May 2023, imagine paying only 2 cents for a $5 share, but that’s probably really fanciful.

I am not sure how options rise in relation to share prices.

This is a “company option” by the way, not an “exchange traded option” which is the domain of professional traders and in my understanding can be very dangerous.
