I've looked at investing in DXS but various State Premiers' lack of commitment to having public (and private) sector return to offices in CBD is a big negative, especially in Melbourne, as is the continual closing of State borders that inhibits freedoms that 12 months ago we took for granted.
DXS Director Penny Bingham-Hall's comments about the relationship between Australia and mainland communist China today are another reason that makes me err on the side of caution about this large company.
She was reported as stating that 'we ought show respect for long-term colleagues' and that 'I would be hopeful that there's a little more respect shown between countries'.
Ms Bingham-Hall also said 'my hope is that there is a reset in 2021 and everyone can step back a bit...business has a role to play because there are some very strong personal relationships between Oz and (mainland communist) Chinese businesses. I really hope that might be able to reset the relationship'.
Whatever Ms Bingham-Hall knows about business, it would appear her knowledge of how mainland communist China operates is deficient.
Has this DXS Director ever criticised this Marxist regime for its treatment of pro-democracy Hong Konger Jimmy Lai? Or Pope Francis for his refusal to see the former Archbishop of Hong Kong when the latter travelled recently to the Vatican? Or the mainland Chinese government's disgusting treatment of allegedly more than a million minority Uighurs who are being held in remote 'detention centres' to be reeducated? Or how Western websites and other methods of communication are routinely unavailable in mainland China? Or its threatening words against that wonderful beacon of democracy, Taiwan, whose handling of COVID-19 has been best in the world, notwithstanding that many suggest the virus 'escaped' from a Wuhan, mainland China laboratory?
Scott Morrison's Liberal-Nationals were elected as our Federal Government.
Leave the foreign relations to it, not naive re foreign policy business(wo)men, Ms Bingham-Hall.
And please recall history in how appeasers have rarely, if ever succeeded.
Look at what is now the UK in the 1930s under one 'NC'. If Australia has to suffer economically in the short to medium term, so be it. The alternative is to be forced to accede to more and more demands from mainland China, and to become a client state of it. As Nigel Farage in the UK suggests, mainland China wants to take over the world. The democratic West cannot allow this to occur.
It's regrettable that some in business fail to present a united front to mainland China. It loves to exploit what it perceives as 'differences'. I'm sure 'Global Times' will feature Ms Bingham-Hall's comments in time. But she doesn't speak for me or millions of other ASX listed company investors.
