The average "EV battery" of today has perhaps ~15-20-years of useful life (you can find this number in any number of reports and articles); ~8 years in a car; ~12 years supporting power storage (MUCH easier duty cycle than EV). Both of these numbers go up every year.
Today's average ICE car lasts ~12 years; that's better than 12 years ago and it will be better yet in 12 years.
The EV batteries being made today are much better than those made 10 years ago; in 10 years they will be better, too. The early data is very encouraging. Not to mention, careful owners can greatly improve their battery's performance; not so different than learning how to make your clutch last longer, or your tires.
Current metrics (no pun intended) are not well established and they are constantly being improved by the advance of both software and hardware discoveries. Impacts of time on the newest batteries inform the next generation.
The EV battery is going to transform grid storage, not recycling. Every year the investment case for a second lifetime becomes stronger.
