Dyesol Meets Second Last Milestone – Ready to Produce DSTO Panels
Canberra, Australia……16 April 2008 - Leading dye solar cell materials manufacturer Dyesol (ASX:DYE) has met the second last milestone in the contract with Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) for the development and demonstration of light weight flexible camouflage solar panels.
On March 31, the Dyesol project team demonstrated the panel to DSTO at the Demonstration Readiness Review. The outstanding features of the devices produced by Dyesol are the ability to produce charging voltage under any light level, excellent camouflage and very good stability over a wide temperature range.
Dyesol has now commenced manufacture of the panels for demonstration to Commonwealth Defence as the final milestone in this very successful project. That milestone is due for completion in June this year.
Dr Gavin Tulloch, Project Director and Managing Director, Global said “The project has to date resulted in two new patent applications for Dyesol and its success has encouraged the company to proceed to engineer the product for volume manufacture in association with international and local partners. This is another example of Dyesol’s leadership in DSC technology”.

The Technology – DYE SOLAR CELLS
DSC technology can best be described as ‘artificial photosynthesis’ using an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric current many times stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants. Compared to conventional silicon based photovoltaic technology, Dyesol’s technology has lower cost and embodied energy in manufacture, it produces electricity more efficiently even in low light conditions and can be directly incorporated into buildings by replacing conventional glass panels rather than taking up roof or extra land area.
    The Company – DYESOL Limited
Dyesol is located in Queanbeyan NSW (near Canberra) and in August 2005 was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX Code ‘DYE”). Dyesol manufactures and supplies a range of Dye Solar Cell products comprising equipment, chemicals, materials, components and related services to researchers and manufacturers of DSC. The Company is playing a key role in taking this third generation solar technology out of the laboratory and into the community.
