In 1942 (I was 10) and I was helping shift a mob of cattle west of Gayndah, Qld. We stopped for lunch beside a near dry creek. There was an old swaggie sharing our billy. He was talking about how bad it was along the Darling River with it only being a series of small waterholes. He was on his way from Victoria and had followed the Murray first and told us it was so low that the river boats were having trouble navigating.
He also said that he had seen it much worse in 1890s when there were barges loaded with wool that were stranded in a dry river. Guess the BOM don't have a record they would be prepared to publish for those times.
