I have just returned from Darwin and sure enough, I observed not a single dedicated charging station between Brisbane and Darwin.
No doubt you'd have to grovel to a local servo or caravan park owner for the use of a 240v outlet to plug in to...and be charged what ever they felt like charging you for the convenience or charging.
I certainly cannot see Barkley Homestead buying a larger generating plant to help out EV owners that actually make it that far!
What would happen if there ever was an increase in electric cars, is the owners of the businesses would be selling their electricity for a monster profit...why wouldn't you when some poor sap is blocking your driveway with a totally useless lump of metal with a flat battery.
There are a number of stretches of road too where there is no fuel for 170 kms plus, so I would not risk driving some glorified golf cart anywhere outside of suburbia...
