Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said the government was preparing for a world where advanced cyberattacks using quantum decryption could compromise previously safe data sets, and the nation’s “interconnected cities are held hostage through interference in everything from traffic lights to surgery schedules”.The minister said the government was preparing for worst-case scenarios following last year’s major Optus and Medibank data breaches.
Between these breaches and last week’s attack on Latitude Financial – in which an estimated 14 million customer records were accessed by hackers – O’Neil said virtually every Australian had been directly affected by a cyberattack or knew someone who had been.
