E.ON to partner on another 1,900 low carbon homes in London

UK energy company E.ON has teamed up with Barratt Homes to build another 1,900 eco homes in London.
The two new projects at the former St. Andrews Hospital in East London and New South Quarter in Croydon will bring the total number of low carbon homes co-developed in London by E.ON and Barratt to 3,400. It follows hot on the heels of a similar project between the power and gas player and another developer, Inland Homes, to build 770 low carbon properties in West London.

    Low carbon energy
E.ON?s role in all of the projects is to deliver low carbon energy schemes for the communities. In the case of St. Andrews Hospital and New South Quarter, these are combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and biomass boilers for heating and hot water. The new 1,900 homes will contribute to E.ON and Barratt?s carbon reductions of 18,500 tonnes over 10 years.

"Partnership working plays a key role in the success of large scale eco-developments such as this," said Jeremy Bungey, E.ON head of community energy.

    Lower bills
CHP energy is produced locally so that it does not need to travel through the National Grid, which reduces losses in transmission and helps reduce CO2 emissions and cost for the end user.

"Decentralised energy centres, which generate community based, low carbon energy from more sustainable sources, help customers to lower their energy bills by using energy more efficiently and lowering carbon emissions," Bungey said.

    Other projects
E.ON and Barratt homes are already working on two similar projects at Dalston Square in Hackney and Maple Quay in east London.

The Dalston Square 550 home development is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 29 per cent compared with traditional properties, and energy costs are expected to drop by 23 per cent.

Once finished, the Maple Quay 950 homes and business project is expected to see a 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions when compared to gas heating.
