The importance of the E protein is evident by its involvement in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV, and possibly SARS-CoV-2, making it an ideal therapeutic candidate. Already, a p38 MAPK inhibitor has shown promise in mice by alleviating the inflammationinduced symptoms brought on by the SARS-CoV E protein. Given the involvement of hCoV E in various aspects of the coronaviral life cycle, targeting E could hold the potential to stopping the spread of infection while simultaneously alleviating the symptoms and managing complications such as ARDS in severe SARS-CoV infections. Coronaviral research would certainly benefit from investigating the therapeutic potential of a p38 MAPK inhibitor in a SARS-CoV-2 infection of mice. The gravity of the COVID-19 pandemic warrants more research into hCoVs and how such outbreaks can be addressed, now more than ever.
