    Shenzhen Metro Network

The Shenzhen Metro Phase 1 network, now in operation comprises two lines, Line 1 (L1) between Lo Wu and the "Windows of the World" in the east-west direction, and the first phase of Line 4 (L4) connecting Huanggang Boundary Control Point with Shaoniangong in the north-south orientation. Interchange between L1 and L4 is provided at Huizhanzhongxin Station. The Phase 1 network, comprising 20 stations, has been opened for service on 28th December 2004.

The Shenzhen Municipal Government plans to expand the rail network by constructing 8 new extensions, of which 4 are metro lines (new Lines 2 and 3, and extension of Lines 1 and 4) whilst the remainders are fast regional light rails (Lines 6, 8, 11 and 12) by 2010 (See Figure 1 for the proposed rail network for Shenzhen).

The extension of Shenzhen Metro L4, i.e. Phase 2, forms part of the major delivery programme of the overall rail development plan in Shenzhen.

    Project Description

The Shenzhen Metro Line 4 Phase 2 project is a vital part of the Shenzhen overall rail expansion plan. It forms a logical extension of the Line 4 Phase 1 rail line, extending northwards from Shaoniangong Station (Juvenile Activity Centre) to Qinghu Station.

Line 4 Phase 2 is approximately 15.8 km long, consisting of approximately 5 km of underground section and 10.8 km of at-grade and elevated sections. It has 10 stations, i.e., two underground stations, one at-grade station, and seven elevated stations. In addition, a maintenance depot will be constructed at Longsheng Station. The two underground stations and the associated tunnels will be constructed using drill-and-blast method and Tunnel Boring Machine which is specially built for this project.

The total project cost is approximately RMB6.0 billion, which is 100% funded by MTR as an investment project. This investment railway project is expected to complete by September 2010. MTR has established a subsidiary company in Shenzhen, MTR Corporation (Shenzhen) Limited, to undertake the project management of this investment project in Shenzhen.

The project also involves the acquisition of property development rights from the Shenzhen Municipal Government along Line 4 with an aggregate gross floor area of 2.9 million m2.

On 26th May 2005, MTR Corporation initialled a Concession Agreement with Shenzhen Municipal Government on the investment, construction and operation of Shenzhen Metro Line 4.

On 4th November 2005, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Phase 2 Trial Section was held in Shenzhen. Mr Xu Zongheng, Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal Government was one of the officiating guests.
