hwill, I don't think any government in Australia has ever gotten rid of a tax, once it was implemented and no matter how much they railed against it in opposition,. Except, of course, where they were able to replace it with another tax (GST comes to mind).

I remember when Fraser introduced Import Parity Pricing for oil in the late 1970s. Labor called it a 'vicious, criminal, iniquitous tax. a taxman at every petrol pump'. They promised they would abolish it as soon as they got into office. What happened? They not only didn't abolish it, they indexed it.
