I know I'm in a different space here, but I think it's worth pointing out that in my super fund (and I'm sure it applies to quite a few others) BHP is classified as ethically acceptable where others, such as Rio, Lonmin and XStrata, aren't.
A long time back, I put myself into the ethical option so that I wouldn't be compelled to own shares in Gunns, which turned out to be a good idea. In fact, in my super fund, which is Unisuper, the ethical options are outperforming the others across the board. I suspect that's partly because they never invested in the companies John West rejects. Like Gunns.
