There was a brilliant research paper released about 6/12 months ago...re gold.
It analysed gold's performance vs other asset classes, and found that gold outperformed significantly when all alternative investments were underperforming.
They found a -0.87 correlation (from memory) between gold and US equities... this was based on many decades of data (from memory 50+ years).
