I understand this, but it does make you wonder why they would manufacture audio chips for one customer, and then make their own chips as well. If they were just manufacturing things for customers, why would they need a specialist in algorithms?

That being said, it could be part of the manufacturing process - i'm far from an expert on how a MEMS device is produced and what kind of specialists are needed in the (e.g.) QA phase.
