A TYPICAL tradesman on the desalination project in Wonthaggi is set to earn about $150,000 a year for a four-day week under a deal that has also seen the resolution of a bitter union turf war threatening to delay the project.
The signing of the deal late yesterday will finally allow the building contractor, Thiess Degremont, to accelerate the hiring of staff on Victoria's largest infrastructure project, which will directly employ about 1700 building workers.
Electrical Trades Union state secretary Dean Mighell said the four-day week was a ''significant precedent'' for unions.
''It's a bloody terrific project and it heralds the arrival of the four-day week for workers, which makes me extremely happy for Christmas,'' he said.
Workers would work four 10-hour days and then take four days off, Mr Mighell said.
sooner or later, this will have flow through effects - which in the end, will affect people with savings, as all of the higher wages are inflationary
the worry here is, is that this is not a mining operation - where the mining company is raking in millions - which can be paid as dividends etc etc - so maybe the workers, could also get a bit - but this is a state thingy, which does not generate real income.
