Todays example is Stamp Duty on the purchase of homes. if it did not happen downsizing and moving would be significantly more affordable. Its easy to see how massive subsidies or taxes change significant parts of the economy. " link

"If just one state of Australia, New South Wales, scrapped its stamp duty on real estate transactions, about 100,000 more Australians would move homes each year, according to our best estimates. Stamp duty is an unquestioned part of buying a home in Australia — you put your details in an online mortgage calculator, and stamp duty is automatically deducted from the amount you have to contribute. It's easy to overlook how much more affordable a home would be without it. That means it's also easy to overlook how much more Australians would buy and move if stamp duty wasn't there. The 2010 Henry Tax Review found stamp duty was inequitable. It taxes most the people who most need or want to move."

Governments are not likely to remove the golden goose it is for them. Paid it myself on a $30,000 then $50,000home in Perth then much much more on 3 houses in Victoria I have owned. Each step up in prices has massively increased the tax/stamp duty payable. Try it yourself Vic and South oz are the worst tax burden on buying a $1,000,000 house.
