I cant really state what's right or wrong but trading has a huge aspect of psychology involved. Fear of missing out, greed, excitement, etc. Share prices move based on supply and demand. If the demand outweighs the supply it will go up and vice versa. If the sell side is thin and the buy side is loaded, good news has a higher chance of pushing the SP north. As you say though, if a big player wants to cap share price, they just load the sell side and absorb all the buying pressure.
