Its useful to know Matlab for a research at UC Davis , academic setting , I used it for post grad study ie for matrices , however , STAAD autoCAD ,ansys is more useful from a practical perspective IMHO comes down to those programs being quicker to get results - time is money
As another poster inferred all companies have excel but does not mean it is relevant to use in all situations obviously same with Matlab .
