I lived in China then Thailand both for a year and was surprised the assortment of weeds and flowers they eat growing wild from the side of the road, I guess it was once a necessity, fighting off starvation. You will notice on TV border control programs where Chinese always carry a lot of food travelling, they remember too well the hard days of nothing to eat.
My two favorite freebies are Puha ( Native to NZ ) and watercress. But there are many more wild plants, ferns and weeds etc eaten by Maori.
