Minns defends decision to not back cashless pokies yet

NSW opposition leader Chris Minns has defended his party’s decision to only commit to expanding a cashless gaming trial to 500 machines, saying he wanted to make sure the technology worked before introducing it fully.

The Perrottet government has committed to implementing it across the board.

“We’re not against the proposal. But it’s not in operation anywhere in the world other than one jurisdiction, and they’ve got a daily limit on the amount that you can bet in that pub or that club. So, when we introduce it into NSW, we want to make sure that the technology doesn’t induce problem gambling rather than reduce it,” he told ABC News.

Minns also said the decision to only back a small sample size trial was part of an “evidence-based approach”.

“We need to make sure the trial is up and operational from July 1, 2023. That’s the reason for the 500 number but any venue that we make this operational, and we’ll have a mandatory provision in place so there’ll be no machines where you can put cash in so that people can’t just move one machine over.

“We think that’ll give the evidence base for the independent panel to make a determination.”
