I appologise in advance if I am stating the obvious but at this point the cuffoff for proxies has already occurred, ie all proxy votes had to have been recieved by 10am this morning. Anybody who wanted to cast a vote and wasn't willing to fly to Perth to do it in person pretty much had to have mailed it by Friday at the absolute latest.
By the weekend just gone the company would have already been in possession of 95%+ of all proxies and therefore already knew the outcome of the voting process unless it was so close that it would be decided by votes on the floor at the meeting.
Given the above I'm somewhat bemused by the numerous comments congratulating management for "listening to shareholders". Ummmmm, what ? If they had listened they would have seen this embarrasing defeat coming rather than waiting for all the "no" votes to pile up.
Do you really think that they wouldn't have counted the votes over the weekend. Do you really think that they didn't already know the outcome of each resolution before announcing the withdrawal?
This news is announced to the market 2 hours after the proxy cutoff has already occurred, the outcomes are almost certainly known to management, and this is somehow seen as an example of management "listening" to shareholder concerns? Serious ?
I'm not meaning to be rude here but this was a hard fought battle to get this stopped by so many of us and I lost count of those that sat there telling us that voting is pointless and we can't stop it anyway. It took a large group of us to be committed to this.
I'm stunned that with so many vocal opponents taking the unual step of actually voting against this that some believe management cancelling the meeting was anything more than not wanting to turn up and have to deal with this embarrising defeat in person. But of course all this is my opinion only and people can assume whatever they want. If walks like a duck and quacks like a duck who am I to say it isn't the easter bunny !
