Why do you think people apply it - they apply it from a basis of self interest. What is short trading it isnt anything other than seeing if you can by the use of selling shares into a market cause others to follow and buy them back cheaper.
They choose the stocks - mugs just gamble or take a stand - Watch stocks that UBS go into and borrow stock and watch the way the stock moves its fun to watch they can do it both ways as well use borrowed stock buy up more price rises sell into it and then repurchase cheaper as volume comes back in- very uncomfortable if you are a holder. The large players can really play with big numbers and have a full go.
