When the fundamentalists gunned down the beloved president of Egypt, Sadat,in 1981, Mubarak was with him and took one in the hand.
After the 6 day war Egypt had been demoralized by the himiliating defeats. Sadat, planned the october(YonKippur) war in 1973, Mubarak had been given a lot of the credit for the plan. From an image of un trained troops taking off their boots so they could run faster. Now Egypt had an army which swept across the Sinai Peninsula and came very close to defeating Israel.
Israils army under Dyan managed to break around behind the Egyptians and only just saved the day. OK they lost, but Egyptians had regained their pride.
Sadat was no fool and while dirt poor Egypt had been taking the fight to Israel, all of the rich arabs were screaming death to Israel from a safe distance. Sadat was able to negotiate the full return of the Sinai through the negotiated peace process without firing another shot.
For that he was hated by his arab neighbours and fundamentalists in Egypt. That led to his murder in 81. Mubarak, one of the heroes from the 73 war stepped up and has been there since and has always been true to the peace negotiations for the last 30 yrs.
So it looks like murder didnt work so well for them back then. It looks like they are now trying a new route to power. Dont listen to any of the air head comentators in our media and the looser experts they drag in front of the screen.
If Mubarak falls without first building a water tight constitution, the brotherhood is back and war with Israel is back on the table. Just think, why do they want him out in such a disorganized manner. He offered to go in Sept, but they want now.
I lived in Tehran for a while before the revolution. A lot of good people thought if they could just get rid of the Shah, they would have a wonderful peacful Islamic state. That plan didnt work out too well either. The US president (Carter)backed the crowd and the dodo in now is doing the same.
Mabarak's family is worth something like $70 Billion according to the Guardian, so he probably needs to go, but in the orderly manner he has planned.
The west needs to but out.
    Just my opinion
