Cattle exports to Egypt suspended

AUSTRALIA has temporarily suspended live cattle exports to Egypt while authorities in the two nations probe claims of animal cruelty.
The Nine Network's 60 Minutes program tonight aired footage allegedly showing Australian cattle suffering serious mistreatment at abattoirs in Egypt.
The footage showed cattle at Cairo's Bassatin abattoir being stabbed in the eye before having their back leg tendons cut so they could not run away.
It also showed a steel restraint box, provided to the Egyptians by Australia to improve their handling of cattle for slaughter, which appeared to have never been used.
Former police officer and Animals Australia communication director Lyn White, who took the footage, said she had been told the cattle they filmed at the abattoir were from Australia.
"They were such blatant and terrible acts of cruelty at this abattoir, yet obviously completely accepted by the slaughtermen," Ms White said in a statement tonight.
