I have heard that an electric car powered by lead acid batteries and using photovoltaics at current prices to recharge, would deliver a fuel cost equivalent of about 70 cents per litre. This might be why the car makers have been putting so much into r&d of late.
Until the ec, the natural gas option sounds great as an interim solution, with a cost equivalent of less than 30 cents per litre.
