    Yes it has been a mystery to me with modern CAD why manufacturers can't seem to trim weight off cars. Every successive model is larger, we want all the extras that were never even available on older vehicles and a heavier car will always ride (but not handle) better than a light one but they will always use more fuel (or electrons) and more mass will generally mean higher cost of materials too.

    Moving away from a separate chassis (except for serious 4wds) was really the last big advance in producing lighter vehicles, everything else has been largely incremental and outweighed (how about that for a pun) by new features, sound deadening and safety. Weight is especially important for EVs, they are carrying excess mass in the form of batteries to start with so I expect them to use more light alloys and carbon fibre in the future to try to trim that down and subsequently increase range.
