it seems that the Egyptians used something called a zeer pot to keep things cool - using clay pots
probably the one compelling reason for being on the grid is for the refrigeration.. but if food can be kept cool for a few days - then with appropriate timely purchasing from the shops - then easy to go off grid.
cooking can be done with either solar, or a simple wood powered stove .
light can come from solar rechargeable led's
maybe a couple of solar panels would be enough to power an energy efficient tv
