I was in Russia some years ago and went to the park of Achievement in Moscow.
I found it very interesting in a few ways. Their Space travel and their Power Industry.
They do many things very differently to us in Australia.
They motor their Turbine\Generators up to speed and then input the steam to load them up. They have some very big machines.
They have some very long Transmission lines but they use High Voltage DC instead of AC for transmission.
They use DC to reduce losses over long distance.
I know we use DC under Bass Strait but I don't know where else if anywhere.
Does anyone else know?
There is so much to investigate here. Our system is in such a mess.
Also remember Broken Hill Blackouts last year, they could not connect their Renewable Power to the town grid. Can they now?

They use DC to reduce losses over long distance.
Power loss in a cable is proportional to the current, which is why long distance lines step up the voltage. (and therefore less current). AC is usually preferred because it's generally easier to step up/down AC as opposed to DC.
